Hi, Jerry. What has happened since we talked to you last year?

Well as you might know I’m a French Parisian who’s long been based in London. And a year and a half after that deflating UK referendum, it doesn’t look like Brexit is going to go away. For me it’s been a massive blow as by now I’ve spent more years in London than Paris, and often introduce myself as 50/50 French/British, a label I proudly wear because it’s made me who I am. But today it truly feels like the UK is stepping back in time to a more seclusive and nationalistic era, and you can feel it unfortunately.

Sadly those who will suffer most from it are the very same working class people who voted Brexit hoping it would make their life better. Alas! they were fooled by a mirage that will not materialise, throwback fantaisies of a glorious Empire that is really out of touch with today’s world.

It’s particularly depressing as British people as a whole are extremely sociable and tolerant. They’ve been manipulated into this scheme for elections-sake and will pay the price long-term. The other losers will be the young people and the city of London who voted to remain in the EU by 75%.

I always used to say that London was the capital of Europe, the biggest, busiest, craziest… but if it’s not in Europe anymore, what is it going to be now? I find it very sad, and as the events towards this nonsensical divorce unfold painfully, I’m slowly starting to wave goodbye to these immense chapters of my life.

Now although defining the world we live in, life’s not all about politics. So, as well as deejaying and sound-designing for fashion (my two passions), I’ve also spent much of 2017 writing and producing for this new band I’ve put together with two good friends, a life-long dream that’s finally falling into place. I can’t really say much at this point but what I’ll tell you is that this project isn’t for djs but for an indie/electronic audience, songs with vocals, guitars and beats, basslines too. So watch this space for some exciting singles in 2018.

What music have you been listening to of late?

All kinds! I’ve always enjoyed a wide mix of sounds. From new wave to disco, synth pop to funk, electro hip-hop to soul, indie to rock’n’roll… I tend to favour futuristic soundscapes but honestly if it’s got a good melody, groove or energy, I’m in! I guess that’s the pop fan in me. Now I’ve also realised that I became more open-minded with time, as I also dig classical, minimal, world music or other cultures’ music… All music has something to offer. Working for fashion I’ve come to realise that there is a song, a mood, for every moment of the day, every situation… Sure I love music to dance to but there’s so much more than that, you know, feelings, atmospheres, emotions…

Tell us about your new Heart&Soul 12. What kind of inspiration do you use? Where did you find this best tracks?

The original impulse for starting the Heart & Soul mixtapes was that I wanted to be able to play really sensual, feminine, melodic – but still danceable – dj mixes at home during parties. Music that makes you feel voluptuous and ecstatic so you can relax and feel amazing on the dancefloor or on the sofa! You can play these mixes when working, exercising, driving… I hope they also demonstrate there is beautiful, inspiring, meaningful electronic music around, not just what’s in the charts or the tech clubs.

These mixes are my most personal work yet, I put many sounds and styles together like a chef in the kitchen, the whole thing is more about grace and elegance than labels and genres. I try to invite people into a magic trip, like a film or book to listen to.

How do you make a Heart&Soul 12? What kind of process do you use?

I spend many of my days listening to hours and hours of new music in all genres, not all is good or even interesting, it can feel draining having to sift through so much stuff, but I’m curious and always give records a chance, even if it’s just a few seconds. This is the only way to find gems and off the beaten track music in my opinion.

I despatch the tracks that attract my attention in various folders: dj, fashion, Kitsuné, Heart & Soul etc… Then every three months I do a mix with all my findings that have piled up in the Heart & Soul folder. I’m after musicality, which is tragically becoming poorer and poorer as skilled musicians are becoming far and few whilst djs and computer programers are taking over recording studios. And emotion, which stems from musicality, the way different notes of music played on different sounds in a certain order will create a sentiment of joy, nostalgia or else.

It’s obviously better to have more tracks than not enough, this way you know the mix is gonna be great. In the end I usually leave out about half of the original selection to concentrate on the very best tunes. Each track has to be pretty amazing in its own ways, if you have quality ingredients then the mix ends up very tasty.

Give a three advice for beginner DJ’s.

1. Be yourself and stick to your guns and tastes (trust your instincts, use flair and intuition), it’s not gonna be an easy ride but if you want to last you must find your own style rather than copy others or strictly follow what’s going on.
2. Get into the technique (it’s fun eventually and will make you a better, more entertaining dj).
3. Enjoy it and don’t take it too seriously (you’re only playing other people’s records).

In the end anybody can learn to mix, but not everybody’s got passion, personality and good tastes, these are things you don’t quite learn.

Do you love football? Will you go to the World Cup 2018 in Russia?

No, I’m not interested in football, I’m not your typical hetero, in fact I’m not into sports. I don’t find the concept of competition exciting. It’s just all physical stuff, so what? I’m more interested in arts and sciences. People who think or have a sensibility. Like I’m obsessed with astronomy, what is going on in the universe, it just triggers all kind of ideas, the imagination runs free and so many crazy thoughts become possible…

There’s a real poetry to space and what could exist out there. In many ways the humans of planet earth are showing their limits, with all the technology we have at our disposal we’re still killing each others and sucking dry the wealth of the planet. Greed rules the world. And that’s it. Luckily there’s music to escape with and feel sensations like no other. In the end it’s all about love : ) .

Thank you, Jerry! You my heart & soul twice. Your mix was fantastic. See you next time on Soulplay Radio.
